Wheeling man leads police on chase after he was caught shoplifting at Walmart

A Wheeling man is facing almost a dozen serious charges after he was caught shoplifting from a Walmart store, and then led several police departments on a chase.

It happened just after midnight in the Moundsville area.

Police say a 911 call alerted officers that a man was loading televisions into a car in a hotel parking lot.

Moundsville police officers arrived at the Sleep Inn and tried to speak to the man, who was identified as Randy Whipkey.

Police say Whipkey got into a stolen car and crashed into a Moundsville police cruiser. They say four departments followed him when he then got out of that car. Police tried to subdue Whipkey with a stun gun, but he didn't give up.

Instead, officers say he took off on foot into a wooded area.

Whipkey was arrested and is in the Northern Regional Jail on several charges including grand larceny and fleeing police.

His bond is set at $50,000.
