Violent car-jacking leads to lifetime in prison in Ohio County

Clifton Dent could spend almost 100 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to assault and robbery and was sentenced Friday morning.

A violent car-jacking in Wheeling left an elderly woman badly injured.

The victim has now recovered and the man responsible will spend a lifetime in prison.

Clifton Dent could spend almost 100 years in prison. He pleaded guilty to assault and robbery and was sentenced Friday morning.

"I was brought up around negative things, and I want the judge to know I wasn't in my right mind,” Dent said.

He said he was sorry for attacking a woman last year in the North Wheeling area.

The elderly woman was punched in the face several times, leaving her with broken facial bones, two black eyes and she was left bleeding in an apartment parking lot.

"This lady was minding her own business, she had just moved into an apartment, pulled her car up and hadn't gotten out of her car yet and was accosted by Mr. Dent,” said Brian Ghaphery, assistant prosecutor, Ohio County.

“He demanded her keys. She said no. And before she had time to realize what was happening, this man punched her in the face, dragged her out of her car and threw her to the ground."

Dent's attorney asked for mercy, but the judge said no, citing Dent’s criminal past.

"When I look at the pictures of the victim it makes me sick,” Ohio County Circuit Court Judge David Sims said. “And you have forfeited you right to live amongst free society.”

Dent was sentenced to 90 years for the robbery and 1-5 years for the assault. He will spend the rest of his life in prison.
