VFW collecting for troops ahead of holiday season

A local VFW post is collecting for troops stationed overseas.

They're teaming up with businesses to help get them shipped just in time for the holidays.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas quickly approaching, many men and women in the military will not be able to spend the holidays with their families. Bellaire VFW Post 626 is doing what they can to take care of their troops.

Kevin West and Thomas Cotello remember what it was like serving in the U.S. military and being surprised with a package from those at home.

"It was just like a piece of home being sent to you 7,000 to 10,000 miles away,” said West.

They are looking to pass that joy along. Bellaire Post 626 is collecting items for troops overseas. West says that there is a greater need for some things than others may realize.

"It was surprising, with the new list that came out,” West said. “Because the military has grown to such abundance, it's unbelievable what they are asking for. We did our best with what we can come up with."

They are collecting non-perishables, varying from foods to games to clothing.

In addition to the VFW, there are collection bins at ICR and at Thomas Auto Centers. You can drop items at those locations until the end of December.

Cotello and West are thankful that the community is so supportive of the military.

“It just seems like when you do something like this around here, people back it,” Cotello said. “It's really great."

"This valley is very wonderful about supporting their troops,” West said.

Large groups of those items will be sent out Thursday and more shipments are planned for the end of December. West and Cotello said they may continue to collect into next spring.
