The Highlands joining Independence Day celebrations

Just when you thought the Independence Day celebrations were over, a big event is planned in Ohio County this weekend.

Just when you thought the Independence Day celebrations were over, a big event is planned in Ohio County this weekend.

The events, sponsored by Quaker Steak & Lube and the Ohio County Commission, are a first at The Highlands.

Things begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the parking lot at Quaker Steak -- the center of The Highlands complex.

"We are going to have all-day events for the kids -- blowup houses, snow cone machine, live entertainment, all day some different bands, and at dusk, the fireworks, sponsored by The Highlands,” said Christine Thomas of Quaker Steak & Lube.

Leaders in the county have been working hard to attract even more business to The Highlands area. They say they have seen an uptick with the oil and gas industry.

Thomas says she met with county leaders and they wanted to try a new event.

"Something to do, something at The Highlands,” she said. “Everyone else is having celebrations, and I got with county officials and we thought, ‘let’s do it, here we have the perfect spot.”

And most activities get underway at 2 p.m. They run until late in evening with fireworks at dusk.
