As the investigation continues into an ATV theft ring in Jefferson County, multiple suspects have been indicted by a grand jury.

The investigation began at the beginning of July when law enforcement got word that people in northern Jefferson County were stealing ATVs.

"Then they would alter, damage, or even destroy these vehicles in some ways so they wouldn’t be recognizable by law enforcement, and in some ways to alter them, so they could attempt to sell them or pass them off to somebody else," Jefferson County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin said.

But despite the attempts to conceal the stolen property, several suspects were arrested on July 12.

This is what officials are calling a large-scale operation.

"A large-scale theft ring involving a number of 4-wheelers, ATVs from places all over the county, that group of five individuals who were working together to steel these items to serve as look outs for one another to try and figure out when the homeowners wouldn’t be present," Hanlin said.

Labels, colors, and fenders were either altered or destroyed when the thieves had them.

According to reports, the suspects rode the vehicles until they practically worthless.

"Switch the colors, parts, swap them out so if the owner were to see them somewhere, it wouldn’t look the same anymore."

The individuals indicted were:

38-year old Marcus Hale of Toronto

19-year-old Jon Patterson of Toronto

18-year-old Paul Porter of Toronto

18-year-old Dakota Goff of Richmond

21-year-old Cody Hoover of Stratton

Several of the individuals are in the Jefferson County Jail. Others are out on bond.

All will be arraigned on Wednesday.

A trial date will follow.
