Student indicted on rape charges

An 18-year-old student at Buckeye Local is accused of sexually assaulting a special needs student.

On Wednesday, he appeared in front of the grand jury.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies arrested Joseph Reed on October 20 after he allegedly lured and assaulted a 16-year-old special needs student.

Security footage shows Reed holding the alleged victim’s hand as they walk into a school locker room. She later told a friend what happened and that friend went to school officials.

From there, school officials reached out to the sheriff’s office and they were on school grounds within the hour.

Reed was placed in the Jefferson County jail on two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and two counts of gross sexual imposition where he bonded at $50,000.

Reed appeared in front of the grand jury to face his new charges.

“The grand jury returned a 6-count indictment all surrounding the same incident, but there are different versions of the charges, so similar to what was filed in county court,” said Prosecutor Jane Hanlin. “There are two charges of rape, two charges of sexual battery and two charges of gross sexual imposition.”

Reed for the time being is not in school. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
