A single bedbug was discovered and confirmed in a Weirton Elementary School room on Friday morning.

Hancock County Schools Superintendent Tim Woodward took immediate action.

"I thought that this is right and in the best interest of our children and our families that we go ahead and dismiss school today, get our exterminators in here as early as possible so that we can assess and we can begin to use the spray and the exterminate that we need to use to take care of this and also try and give us time to explore maybe where the source of the issue came from," he said.

Weirton Elementary isn't the only school that Woodward is concerned about. He is making sure no cross contamination takes place.

"We are altering our other schools, especially those schools that are recipients of brothers and sisters who live in the Weirton area, but as of right now, there's been absolutely no reports any concerns of anything at our other two schools."

By acting quickly Woodward expects all of his schools to be open Monday.

"I absolutely feel that school will be in session at a regular time on Monday, according to what I've talked with the experts who know about these things and how to exterminate, how to take care of these problems."
