A major waterline break sent water gushing down Woodlawn Avenue onto University Boulevard on Thursday afternoon.

Steubenville City Manager Jim Mavromatis said the break of the 12-inch pipe happened because of a pressure buildup as workers were replacing the city’s aging water system.

It’s part of the water department’s $7 million loan from the Ohio EPA.

The line services the areas of Labelle, Pleasant Heights, Trinity East, and Woodlawn Avenue.

Mavromatis says they quickly began releasing pressure off other valves, hoping to contain the damaged area to Woodlawn.

In the meantime, water was rushing under the roadway, lifting the pavement up in several places before making its way to University Avenue.
