Ohio County Sheriff’s Department looking into scam, theft at The Highlands

The Ohio County Sheriff's Department is investigating at least one scam and theft at The Highlands.

The sheriff's department is searching for two -- possibly three people -- who stole a wallet from a woman at a store at The Highlands.

The victim said she was shopping near the purse section at Kohl’s about 2 weeks ago when a woman approached her asking about a sale. Her wallet was then taken.

Sheriff Tom Howard said he believes a man helped with the scam and theft. Two women have tried to use the victim's credit cards at another store, but were unsuccessful.

Howard says this time of year you have to be careful.

"Overall, just be aware of people in your area getting close,” he said. “You don't think they should be that close, tell someone, don't be afraid to tell security. All the stores have it. And we also have deputies, so don't be afraid to call us at 911 or the regular number in.”

The sheriff says also, don't leave an opportunity for thieves, like leaving your gifts exposed in your car.
