New smoking regulations go into effect in Ohio County

Beginning Tuesday, smoking, vaporizing and the use of electronic cigarettes will be prohibited in hotels, motels and at outdoor public places throughout Ohio County.

The new regulations were approved by the Wheeling-Ohio County Board of Health last November, and include all healthcare property, and government owned property, including Heritage Port and all outdoor festivals held there, such as The Upper Ohio Valley Italian Fest, Blues Fest, and Mountaineer Brew Fest.

The changes to the ban, however, do not affect places like Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack and other gambling establishments.

Officials say they hope to see positive health outcomes, including fewer younger people smoking.
