New Hulu series features former Moundsville penitentiary

A new TV series featuring the former West Virginia State Penitentiary has premiered on Hulu, months after filming garnered attention from local residents in Moundsville.

‘Castle Rock,’ starring Melanie Lynskey, André Holland and Bill Skarsgård, intertwines characters and themes from the works of horror author Stephen King.

The penitentiary was transformed into the Shawshank State Prison for the Hulu series, which premiered last week. Filming took place over a week in September, shutting down a few streets.

‘Castle Rock’ is not the first TV production to utilize the prison; the Netflix original series ‘Mindhunters’ filmed some scenes there, while Syfy’s ‘Ghost Hunters’ and Travel Channel’s ‘Ghost Adventures’ have filmed episodes there as well.

It’s no wonder the former prison attracts spooky productions. Before its closure in 1995, it garnered a reputation for poor conditions, riots and excessive violence. In fact, 36 homicides happened within the prison walls.

Tours are now offered daily, while special events are planned around Halloween.

‘Castle Rock’ will premiere a new episode Aug. 8.
