Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort to open sports book Wednesday

At 10 a.m., on Wednesday, a ribbon cutting will be held at the William Hill Sports Book at Mountaineer.

West Virginia recently legalized sports gambling, and Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort didn't hesitate to get on board.

At 10 a.m., on Wednesday, a ribbon cutting will be held at the William Hill Sports Book at Mountaineer.

Much like the arrival of table games years ago, legalize sports wagering at Mountaineer has seemingly given the casino new energy.

"You can't miss it the boards are up all the signs the TVs are up so you can see the lines as soon as you walk into the casino," said Bill Winkelried, vice president/general manager, Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort. “And it reminds me of Vegas.

From all indications around the state, the book should be very busy. the Hollywood Casino in Charlestown is reportedly seeing more than $2 million wagered a week on sports.

"We definitely have an opportunity here to do as good or even better than they are doing down in Charlestown," Winkelreid said.

He says that’s good for the local economy.

"The more revenue we take in, the more tax that we're paying, but also through jobs,” Winkleried said. “I mean I think it's about 15 people directly related to the sports book that were hired onto run the book."
