Hundreds stand in line for clothing vouchers in Jefferson County

In Jefferson County, hundreds of people are standing in line for clothing vouchers.

Some people stood in line as early as Monday evening outside of the Jobs and Family Services Building.

With the federally funded temporary assistance for needy families’ program, nearly 2,400 clothing vouchers will be available for students age 5-to-18.

Today through Friday, applications can be filled out.

Betty Ferron, director of the jobs and family services department, says this is a very important program for the community as kids start to head back to school.

“It gives the children in our community an opportunity to have new clothes on the first day of school,” Ferron said. “I think we need to realize that a lot of the families that are here today, they are working, they're trying to help themselves. And at this time of the year, it's hard for our families that do meet the 200 percent poverty level because right now they're struggling between paying their bills and buying school clothing.”

The vouchers will be available for pick up on Aug. 27 and 28.
