Former UL teacher sentenced for inappropriate sexual contact with student

Former Union Local High School teacher Tiffany Cordes was sentenced to 18 months in prison at the Ohio Reformatory for Women on Friday morning.

Former Union Local High School teacher Tiffany Cordes was sentenced to 18 months in prison at the Ohio Reformatory for Women on Friday morning.

The sentence comes a few weeks after Cordes pleaded guilty to a felony count of gross sexual imposition after having inappropriate sexual contact is a then 18-year-old male student at the school.

The investigation began when a mother of another student became concerned.

Cordes was officially charged in the case in March.

"I know I brought shame to my district, and I put them in a bad light,” Cordes said. “And I know I made the community question their trust in teachers, and for that I would like to apologize."

"In Belmont County, we truly have great teachers. There's no doubt about it. And the vast majority of our teachers do exactly the correct thing for society and for their and our students,” Judge Frank Fregiato said. “So it's an incredible shame that we have one or two teachers who cast a shadow upon all of our other fantastic teachers, putting them all unfortunately and unfairly in a bad light."

The sentence was the maximum penalty under Ohio law.

"In Belmont County, Ohio, you go to prison for this type of activity with our students," Fregiato said.

Cordes is also now classified as a tier one sex offender for the next 15 years, and her teaching license is revoked for life.

Though the student was 18, age does not matter because teacher was in a position of trust.
