Five-year-old implicated in cause of weekend Bellaire house fire

A house in Bellaire is a total loss after a big fire Saturday, but the circumstances surrounding how the fire started could be described as bizarre at the very least.

“From doing our investigation, it appears that a five-year-old child started this fire,” said Bellaire Police Chief Dick Flanagan.

But this wasn't a case of faulty wiring, or some kind of freak accident that involved a minor.

"Due to the fact that the child was arguing with his mother, the child made the statement that, ‘I don't care, I'm going to light the house on fire.’ Five-year-old kid. The mother leaves to go shopping, and next thing you know, the house was on fire,” Flanagan said.

Based off reports from eyewitnesses on Franklin Street, the boy was later seen running out of the house with a lighter. Flanagan said this isn't the first issue he's had with the family.

"This particular family, these kids have had charges filed on them, or if not all, they're all on probation,” Flanagan said. “Children's services has been notified, the State Fire Marshall is investigating this. We'll continue following up on leads and any of other information we get.”

As for the house, part of the focus shifts to getting rid of what's left of the structure.

"As it stands right now, it's a complete, under safety issue. One part of the house is leaning in and we need to get that taken care of as soon as possible,” Flanagan said.

Flanagan said he is in contact with the owner of the building, who needs to tear it down in the next few weeks
