Crews respond to structure fire in Steubenville

The fire occurred at this Steubenville home on 8th Street Tuesday night.

Crews arrived on scene at a vacant structure fire on 8th Street in Steubenville shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday night.

The road is closed as responders work to contain the scene.

City Manager Jim Mavromatis is working to get a team on scene to knock down the structure, as the staircase inside completely burned down. The fire department reached the upper floor through the roof. The charred wall currently on the side of the vacant house was from a previous fire.

“Floors are burnt out, the side wall is burnt out, so it’s not even safe for us to go back in there if anything happens,” said Steubenville Fire Chief Carlo Capaldi. “The damage to this house is pretty extensive. Like I said, the floors are not safe for anyone to walk on. The supports on the side of the house are burnt out, and it’s really close to the house next to it, so if we come back later and it’s burning, it could potentially set the house next to it on fire, and then move on to the occupied houses on the other side.”

Authorities confirmed the house is abandoned and there currently are no injuries. The house next door is also vacant.

What caused the fire is still under investigation.
