JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ohio — A Brilliant native and author visited the Ohio Valley on Friday to debut his most recent novel.
Robin Yocum was born in Steubenville and grew up in Brilliant, until he went to college at Bowling Green University.
"I became a writer was when I realized I was never going to play second base for the Pittsburgh Pirates. We all have that moment of awakening."
At one point, he was a newspaper reporter.
"I always felt that I was covering other people’s accomplishments,” Yocum said. “When you’re writing a novel, you start with a blank sheet of paper, creating something uniquely yours."
Yocum is an accomplished novelist. And all his books are set in the Ohio Valley.
"I like having my books over here, setting them over here, because what I call the grit and the grind,” he said. “The time I grew up in with the steel mills and coal mines and the hard work makes for a great backdrop."
His latest book titled “A Perfect Shot” takes place in Mingo Junction.
"It’s about a guy who was a basketball star at Mingo High School. He made the winning shot in the state championship game, and its 20 years later, and he really hasn’t accomplished another thing in his life around amid a little murder mystery," Yocum said.
Yocum’s novels can be purchased on Amazon.
