Bridgeport's ex-fiscal officer owes thousands of dollars for improper payments, penalties

Bridgeport’s former fiscal officer owes thousands of dollars for improper payments and penalties.

The state auditor's office issued a release on Tuesday stating Agnes Hess must repay the village more than $22,300.

This comes as the results of the village’s 2014-15 financial audit have been made public.

Auditors found Hess received overtime pay of more than $11,000 without required authorization from village council.

It also shows Hess failed to submit employee income tax and Medicare withholdings to the state and federal government. The village paid penalties and interest for that.

Overall, she must pay nearly $13,000 for improper payments she received, and more than $9,500 for penalties assessed by the state and federal government.

"On the advice of our village solicitor, the village of Bridgeport cannot make any official comment on today's release of the 2014-15 state audit nor on any of its findings," Bridgeport Mayor David Smith said.
