Body found near Route 2 in Ohio County
OHIO COUNTY, W. Va. —
The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a body is found along West Virginia State Route 2 late Sunday morning.
The identity of that man has not yet been released.
Investigators were called to the scene of a dead body lying beside a jogging trail along Route 2. The body was spotted laying on the ground.
Nearby employees of Tunnel Ridge LLC weren’t sure what had happened.
"The guys were busy - they noticed there were a few Sheriff cars and an ambulance down this way with their lights on,” said Tunnel Ridge LLC employee Michael Callaway. “I was in between working. They asked if I could run down and see what it was. They thought it might have been a car accident or something.”
Callaway was able to rule out a car accident quickly when he got closer to the scene.
"When I come down, I noticed they were observing a sheet,” Callaway said. “They had a bed sheet lifted up - and it looked like something the size of a deer.”
Callaway used a pair of binoculars he had to get a closer look, where he saw a hand.
"A little bit unbelievable, especially so close to our job here where we’re at all the time, and being so far in between all the businesses and homes and stuff, this is a big part of the road where there’s nothing here,” Callaway said.
He said the coroner showed up, gathered the man’s belongings, and the Sheriff’s Department was on scene for several hours.
The incident is still under investigation.
"I hope they find out the identity of the person and I hope that person's family is able to cope, and God bless them," Callaway said.
Authorities have given no indication of whether or not they suspect suspicious activity.
