For the first time in nearly 26 years, Steubenville has a new mayor.

Republican Jerry Barilla, with 63 percent of the vote, pulled away from a field that featured fellow candidates Frankie DiCarlantonio, Royal Mayo, and Michael Walenciej, and will replace longtime mayor Domenick Mucci.

“It’s an honor, and I’m humbled by the turnout that supported me in this mayoral race,” Barilla said. “It’s a true blessing from being born in Steubenville to this elevation of being the mayor of the city of Steubenville. It’s just an honor for me. I’m humbled. And I’m just so thankful for the citizens of Steubenville to put me in this race to become mayor and to achieve this tonight.”

Meanwhile Craig Petrella (51 percent) beat incumbent Michael Johnson (49 percent) for Steubenville’s 2nd Ward council seat, and incumbent Bob Villamagna kept his 6th Ward council seat by taking 57 percent of the vote against challenger Sam Ivkovich.

And finally, Steubenville’s 5 mill expenses levy passed by a 69 percent margin.
