The Jefferson County Port Authority met Wednesday, with one of the longer lasting discussions regarding a coal recovery grant through the U.S. Economic Development Authority.
The money is intended to help people who are in areas impacted by coal plants shutting down. Grant funding would go towards economic development in those areas.
Port Authority officials believe it could be useful in Jefferson County, specifically those affected by the Sammis plant closure.
“You'd get a coal recovery coordinator to help with job losses, but also to consider other types of planning, like developing a strategic plan to make a more resilient workforce, economy, and look at other avenues for job creation,” Port Authority Director Robert Naylor said.
While no decision was made regarding the grant, a three-person committee was formed to look into more possibilities going on coal recovery.
