Obecny Five Shots Back Entering Final Round At W.V Amateur

Updated: Thursday, June 12 2014, 07:06 PM EDT

(White Sulphur Springs) It was moving day at the 95th West Virginia Amateur which is being held at The Greenbrier Resort.  The forty players who successfully maneuvered yesterday’s cut began their day with their eyes set on making a move up the leaderboard and placing themselves within grasp of the coveted West Virginia Amateur title, the Greenbrier championship trophy, and that all exclusive exemption into The Greenbrier Classic. Once again the weather turned out more favorable than predicted and players were welcomed to absolutely perfect scoring conditions on The Meadows Course for their third round. After two opening rounds where the golf courses definitely got the best of the players, The Meadows Course yielded itself to a few more red numbers as the round three scoring average was a tournament low 73.9.

Thirty-six hole leader, Josh Holmes, began the round with a one-shot lead but after a costly four-putt on the par-3, 2nd hole, Holmes found himself relinquishing that lead. It was a battle from then on as Holmes added three bogeys and an additional double-bogey on his opening nine holes. Even with carding two birdies on the back, Holmes could not recover from the three double-bogeys in his round and found himself in a tie for 14th after posting a third round 78 giving him a three day total of 219. Bridgeport’s, Woody Woodward, continued his steady play that has benefited him all week. His third round, 71, included two birdies and three bogeys and was good enough to maintain his second place position on the leaderboard heading into tomorrow’s final round. On a day that included six rounds under par, Hurricane’s Brian Anania posted a blemish free round of three under-par, 67, that included birdies on holes one, four, and eighteen. Anania, who recently captured the State Four-Ball Championship, heads into tomorrow’s final round on The Old White, TPC with a two-stroke lead looking to better his runner-up finish in last year’s West Virginia Amateur Championship. Sitting in third place is Evan Muscari from Pineville who posted a one under-par round of 69 giving him a two-day total of 214.

Several past champions also made the most out of moving day. Thirteen-time West Virginia Amateur Champion, Pat Carter, jumped back into the mix with a third round 68 placing him four shots back of the leader Anania. Also carding a sub-par round was defending champion, Sam O’Dell. Like Anania, O’Dell’s third round included three birdies and not a single bogey on his way to a current tournament total of 216, five shots back of the leader. Tomorrow’s final round is set to begin on The Old White, TPC at 8:00AM with the leaders teeing off at 9:57AM. In addition to claiming the Greenbrier trophy the 2014 Amateur Champion will also receive an exemption into the 2014 Greenbrier Classic. This incredible opportunity is The Greenbrier Classic and Tournament Chairmen (Mr. Justice) commitment to amateur golf in the state of West Virginia.
