Wheeling Nailers Win Again At Home

Updated: Wednesday, April 2 2014, 12:49 AM EDT

WHEELING, WV- Mike Condon had played just one game in the last 16 games prior to Tuesday night, making him plenty prepared for another stellar performance between the pipes. Condon stopped all 34 shots he faced, for his fourth shutout and 20th victory of the season, while four different players found the back of the net, as the Wheeling Nailers blanked the Toledo Walleye, 4-0. The win was Wheeling's third of the homestand and eighth in the last nine games.

After a scoreless first period, the offense erupted for the Nailers in the middle frame, as they scored three goals in a span of 5:40. The first tally came at the 4:36 mark, when Sahir Gill centered the puck to Max MacKay on the right side of the slot. MacKay gathered in the pass, and lifted a shot into the right side of the cage. 3:44 later, Shane Bakker redirected a Chaz Johnson shot home, upping the Wheeling lead to two. Johnson now has points in six straight games and seven of his last eight. 1:54 after that, Christiaan Minella took his turn denting the twine, as he finished off another pass by Gill from the trapezoid.

The score remained 3-0 until the closing seconds of the contest, when Tyler Fernandez scored on a breakaway, which was created by Peter Merth's pass from his defensive zone. Thanks to an assist earlier in the game, Fernandez extended his point streak to five games, as the Nailers stretched their home winning streak to five, with a 4-0 triumph.

Mike Condon was perfect on 34 shots in goal for Wheeling, as earned his fourth shutout and 20th win of the campaign. Three of his four shutouts have come against teams from Ohio. Hannu Toivonen was the losing goaltender for Toledo, making 28 saves on 32 shots.

The Nailers will continue their six-game homestand on Wednesday, when they face the Toledo Walleye again at 7:00.
