Wheeling man accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl

Wheeling's Richard Zimmerman was already accused of sexually abusing a teenage girl when officials began investigating into the possibility of more victims.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Matthew Adams says one accuser had several concerns about coming forward after alleged sex crimes took place at a slumber party after a high school basketball game last February when the girl was woken up by the 37-year-old Zimmerman.

"She stated that the suspect, Richard Zimmerman, had touched her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her, but she was staying at a friend's house during that time," Adams said.

Adams says she finally told a friend and her father when Zimmerman continued to harass her through text messages. Police say they don't believe Zimmerman has a job, but he is an Army veteran.

Adams says another incident has been reported in Hancock County with a different alleged victim, but officers are still investigating.

"We are looking into the possibility that there may be other victims out there, others that may have known him, had some association with him as far back as 2010 and moving forward," Adams said. "So we are asking anyone that may have been a victim to get ahold of us at the state police."

Zimmerman is in West Virginia Northern Regional Jail on $100,000 bond.
