Weirton facing lawsuit from former policeman

The city of Weirton is facing a lawsuit by a former employee.

It all stems from an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead in May 2016.

A lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of Stephen Mader, a former police officer at the Weirton Police Department, who was fired shortly after being involved in an officer-involved shooting.

It’s a story with two sides to it. Mader has claimed he was let go after choosing not to shoot Ronald Williams Jr., who had a gun drawn, but gave Mader the impression it was a suicide by cop scenario. Other law enforcement arrived and shot Williams when he raised his weapon.

City officials claimed Mader was fired for other questionable actions in that incident, as well as several missteps on the job prior to the May shooting.

Weirton City Manager Travis Blosser said officials have not yet had time to review the lawsuit.
