The Christmas spirit was in full swing at Chambers and James Funeral Home on Wednesday.

Volunteers came to wrap Christmas sweaters for veterans. They collected over 250 sweaters to give out.

They started collecting on Veterans Day and decided Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day was the day to bring the community back together to honor those who served. Most volunteers came from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, which also includes many veterans.

“RSVP called and asked if I could donate to help wrap gifts and this is what Christmas is all about, not just a feeling, letting you really understand it and feel it,” said John Fox, 1958-1962 Air Force veteran.

Brooke pre-K and kindergarten students decorated thank you notes to go on the presents and Rite Aid, Macy’s and other businesses donated the wrapping supplies.

The next phase is distribution. Chambers and James will work with the Tri-State Young Marines to get the gifts out to veterans in nursing homes, veterans centers, and homeless shelters until all the sweaters are gone.
