U.S. Senators Rob Portman of Ohio and Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia both visited the Rosebud Mine in Bergholz on Wednesday.

They were given a tour of the site and the facilities, and even took time to speak with some of the workers. A lot of the discussion pertained to the struggles that workers, and the mining industry, are facing today.

Both said job stability is a big concern.

“It's tough,” Portman said. “I mean there's a lot of unpredictability. They were talking about the fact that they've watched guys get laid off and go home to their families and explain it.”

"We're asking for research and development,” Moore Capito said. “We're asking for some consistency so that the folks that we talked with today know that tonight when they go home, they're not going to have the anxiety of having to deliver the bad news that they're laying off at the mine again."

Portman and Moore Capito hope to take what they heard back to Washington to work on resolutions for the industry and the workers.

The visit was part of the Portman for Senate Campaign's "Moving Ohio Forward" RV Tour, which will make 50 stops across 30 counties and cover more than 3,500 miles.
