Trinity Health System hosts Heartland 2018

It's known as the largest heart risk appraisal under one roof.

Trinity Health System played host to Heartland 2018 at the Fort Steuben Mall on Thursday.

It’s the 25th year for Heartland, and it's not just an opportunity to get your blood work done.

Toronto’s Richard Fetty has been going to the event with his wife for the last 5 years. It's an opportunity he says they don't like to miss.

"We get everything -- whatever is available,” he said. “We get the whole thing because it's economic, it saves money for your insurance, and when we save money for them, we save money for ourselves."

More than 1,000 people were expected to come take advantage of a great opportunity for blood work at a reduced cost.

It's grown a lot over the last 25 years.

"We started with just cholesterol screenings, and it's worked its way into a full blood screen now that we've been doing," said Keith Murdock, director of community relations at Trinity Health System.

Forty employees are standing by to help answer questions from your heart health to diet and exercise.

"We have the heart team out here,” Murdock said. “The whole cardiac program is represented and also a few other departments in the hospital that support the chest pain center and the other cardiac programs that we have, so there's a lot of information and a lot of giveaways."

You can start practicing some new healthy habits today.

"Walking, going to the mall, like today, doing a couple laps around the mall, doing some cycling, dancing activities of daily living, such as going up and down the stairs doing dishes, doing a couple laps around your house can really have a positive impact on your heart," said Macaela Roach, student intern, cardiac rehab.

For Murdock, this Heartland will be his last. He’s retiring this year.

“It's a bitter sweet moment for me," he said.

If you missed Heartland, don’t worry. You can get your testing done at the Prime Time Center. They run those once a month.
