Students learning at the Junior Police and Fire Academy in Ohio County

Students in Ohio County are learning important safety tips at the Junior Police and Fire Academy at Bridge Street Middle School.

“They're learning very important safety and good decision-making skills, leadership skills, to keep themselves safe and out of trouble,” said Sgt. Don Miller of the Wheeling Police Department.

All of the students were a part of the D.A.R.E. programs at their school and chose to take part in the academy.

All week from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., members of the Ohio County Sheriff's Office and Wheeling police and fire departments are leading lessons and hands-on exercises, such as how to put somebody in a splint, or give them an Epipen or an inhaler.

Other topics for the first day included how to stop a bleeding cut and recognizing the symptoms of a seizure.

This week they'll also learn CPR, biking safety, internet safety, as well as how to operate a fire extinguisher and an AED.

It’s important information for everyone to know.

“It's never too early to start teaching your children safety skills,” Miller said. “These age-appropriate safety skills benefit them, along with their families and classmates."

And the students are soaking it all in.

“If someone is hurt and it's just you and them, and they can't do anything, you need to be able to call 911 and help them," student Julia Kelly said.

The week will end with a graduation ceremony held for those students at Noon on Friday at noon in the middle school.
