Shining Star: 6-year-old Irelyn Orr asks for donations for needy family for her birthday

Irelyn Orr took inspiration from the musical-fantasy movie ‘Mary Poppins’ to make a difference in the lives of others.

At only 6, she is certainly “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

Her recent birthday party appeared to be typical, featuring Duck, duck, goose, crafts to “feed the birds,” and a spoon full of ping pong balls to balance.

But the one wearing the birthday bonnet is a little girl inspired by the Governess.

“It's all about Mary Poppins, and so she’s really nice, and I figured I can’t make that story go on with her by giving donations,” Irelyn said.

In a bottomless bag, there are birthday cards that carry something extra special. They’re donations to buy gifts for a family in need at Garfield Elementary School in Wellsville.

She asked for those in lieu of birthday presents for herself.

“Some people don’t have much money and much food, and so I wanted to give them a donation to help,” Irelyn said.

It's something her mother, Erin, encourages all year round.

“We take her to a lot of community events and tell her it's important to be a part of your community and give back to your community,” Erin said.

So it's no wonder the day was more about the penguins than the presents.

“It just makes me so happy,” Irelyn said. “I don't get the presents; they get the presents.”

“She came up with it, and she did it, so it was quite a surprise to me, what 6-year-old doesn't want presents?” her father, Jason, asked. “I just kept supporting her.”

The party goers -- and her parents -- were proud.

“Hopefully other kids see this and would think about doing the same thing,” Irelyn’s uncle Martin Timlin said.

“I hope that she just inspires somebody to do something like this,” Erin said.

“I'm kind of excited to see what happens next,” Jason said. “If she came up with this now. What's going to happen in 2 years?

As it turns out, this little Mary Poppins is already planning ahead to her next donation.

To Children’s Hospital.

This week, a Shining Star that's practically perfect in every way.
