Redman on trial for sex crimes in Ohio County
WHEELING, W.Va. - The case of a convicted sex offender accused of sexually assaulting and abusing a young Wheeling began Tuesday in Ohio County.
Redman has already been convicted of sex crimes against a 9-year-old boy in Belmont County. He was also convicted of another misdemeanor sex crime in Ohio. Now, he's facing charges against a then 10-year-old girl in Wheeling.
West Virginia State Police say the sex crimes took place from 2005-2006 -- several times a month-- in a home on Stone Church Road.
Prosecutors say the first alleged incident was brought to the attention of authorities in December 2005 when Redman allegedly offered cash to the young girl to watch him touch himself inappropriately.
Prosecutors say it wasn't thoroughly investigated and the abuse escalated.
"He calls her into the bathroom to brush her teeth and proceeds to kiss her on the neck and tells her to pretend he's a boy she has a crush on in school," Ohio County Assistant Prosecutor Jenna Perkins said.
However, the defense says that incident was investigated and unfounded.
"The next thing she says is nothing else happened, and finally allegations are properly and thoroughly investigated and no charges, nothing else happened to Mr. Redman," defense attorney Toim Pavlinic said.
Several witnesses were called to the stand, including investigators and the alleged victim's mother.
The trial continues Tuesday morning.
