Harrison County Prosecutor Owen Beetham spent much of Thursday morning talking about a case of a parent leaving a child in a car.

Only he wasn’t discussing a client. He was talking about himself.

The incident came to light Wednesday morning during the Harrison County Commission meeting. Beetham was attending the meeting when he received a text message that made him realize that instead of dropping off his 18-month-old at his mother’s house like he normally does, he had left her in the car for up to 90 minutes, according to police, when he went to work.

“My mother text me asking me where we were,” Beetham said. “I immediately recognized the error that I had made. I rushed out of the meeting, crossed the street to my car…

“When I opened the door, she looked at me and cried. I took her out, couldn't believe I had done that. I took her inside, made sure she was OK, and got some wet towels. I put those on her to make sure if there was an issue, to start to address it.”

Beethman’s secretary called an ambulance. The child is reportedly fine, and did not require an IV to replenish her fluids at the hospital. She was kept for an hour for observation.

Beetham said his daughter was sleepy Wednesday morning.

“She wasn't the normal talking or singing, and I drove in, I drove past my mother’s house where I drop her off and I parked my car at my office and I forgot,” Beetham said.

After parking, he ducked into office his office, answered an email, and when he went to the commission meeting, he received the text from his mother.

“This is one of those things I think that none of us think will ever happened to us, but it can," Beetham said. "So what I want to be able to say is, remind people to that it can happen to you, and to check the backseat. And if, God forbid, something like this happens to you, call medical personnel, make sure. Make sure to do everything you can to make sure that everybody is absolutely fine.

"There's no explanation, it just happened."

The Cadiz Police Department filed a report and handed the matter over to Ohio BCI and a children's services entity from outside the county.
