A former Newcomerstown police officer pleaded guilty Wednesday to fabricating a story about being shot in the line of duty.

The incident took place in April when Officer Bryan Eubanks shot himself while on duty. At the time, he claimed he was shot by a man in another vehicle while conducting a traffic stop.

The story led to a massive manhunt involving local, state, and federal authorities. A suspect was even captured and questioned before being released.

An investigation by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office found inconsistencies with Eubanks’ story and determined he tampered with evidence.

Eubanks pleaded guilty to inducing panic, making false alarms, tampering with evidence, forgery and worker's compensation fraud on Wednesday.

He was indicted in July. His peace officer certification is being revoked and he could face prison time.

A sentencing date has not been set.
