OHSP: OVI numbers in Belmont, Jefferson counties ‘off the charts’

The St. Clairsville and Steubenville posts of the Ohio State Highway Patrol teamed up this St. Patrick's Day.

"The numbers this year are off the charts," said James Faunda of the St. Clairsville Post.

Between the two posts, they made 22 OVI arrests in 3 days.

"We had a felony gun arrest and a cocaine and meth arrest during the weekend," Faunda said.

That's compared to last year during the same reporting period, where just three people were arrested for OVI.

"I think it had a lot to do with St. Patrick's day being on a Friday this year,” Faunda said. “More people probably went out to enjoy the weekend. "

But the patrol is also seeing more people driving impaired in general. With more alcohol and drug-impaired drivers on the road.

"Year to date, the OVI arrests between the two posts are far above what they were this time last year,” Faunda said. “We're seeing the same names and faces time and time again. People are just not getting the message."
