Ohio Valley native to sing anthem at New Orleans Bowl
After entering an online competition, an Ohio Valley native will be performing at the 2017 New Orleans Bowl Saturday afternoon.
This, for him, is a combination of passion and service for his country.
"Any opportunity there is to have any sort of musical experience, I’ll do it,” said contest winner Gregory Afek.
Born and raised in the Ohio Valley and a graduate of Weirton Madonna High School, Afek set out on two journeys in life.
One, as a musician, the other, to serve his country as an aviation maintenance technician in the Coast Guard.
"It’s just really, really cool to combine my music side with Coast Guard career and to put them both together of one amazing event,” Afek said.
Afek submitted a video into a Facebook contest and won. He said he was shocked and even tried to get the other finalist to perform with him, but there wasn’t enough time. During his sound check, everything was smooth sailing
"I just felt my heart throwing everything out there, you know, representing in uniform,” Afek said. “I’m just stoked, it was awesome."
As a member of the Coast Guard since 2007, he says this feels as though Saturday will be an extra extension of his service
"This was certainly a huge opportunity to sing our county’s anthem, and I’m just truly grateful and very humbled and glad right now,” Afek said.
Despite some nerves, Afek said he was excited to hit the field tomorrow.
