Officials pushing for Market Street Bridge to be designated as a historic landmark

Brooke County commissioners are supporting an initiative for the Market Street Bridge to be designated as a historic landmark.

Brooke County commissioners are supporting an initiative for the Market Street Bridge to be designated as a historic landmark.

Commissioners voted in Tuesday's meeting to approve a letter of support that the historic landmark committee requested.

The bridge was built in 1922, and commissioners say they feel the designation is appropriate.

“It's a showcase for the Ohio Valley,” Commissioner Tim Ennis said. “As time goes on, the designation of it being a historic landmark will probably mean that the bridge would remain open for vehicular traffic.”

Ennis says it will be a lengthy process before the historic landmark committee hears if the bridge is put on the historic landmarks list.
