Officials level remains of vacant home after Wednesday night fire in Steubenville

Officials are investigating what caused a fire at a home along South 8th Street in Steubenville on Wednesday night.

Officials are investigating what caused a fire at a home along South 8th Street in Steubenville on Wednesday night.

Crews were on scene Thursday morning to tear down the vacant home after it was determined the house was unsafe to leave standing.

“Due to the fire damage in the house, and there was a partial collapse on the first floor already because the fire was in the basement, and some of the side support walls were burnt out, the safety of our people and the safety of the neighborhood, too, comes into play when we determine that,” Steubenville Fire Department Chief Carlo Capaldi said.

Officials say 2 years ago, the house next door caught fire. Because of those flames, this house already had some damage.

There were no injuries reported.

Fire inspectors are still working to figure out exactly what caused the blaze.
