New program provides hot meals for Indian Creek students after school

Beginning Wednesday, the Indian Creek School District is launching a new program to make sure its students are able to get a hot meal after school.

The district was approved for the Child and Adult Care Food Program through the Ohio Department of Education.

The free program will help ensure more students are fed.

Hot meals will be available at the high school from 3:15-4 p.m., and it's open to anyone in the school district under the age of 18.

School buses will commute from the district's Mingo Junction campus to the high school as well.

With many students staying after school for sports and extra-curricular activities, ICSD Food Director Eric White says there is a need to feed kids after school hours.

“It's more of a benefit to the students,” White said. “We want to give the community, and our district especially, the chance to have a hot meal for the evening. A lot of kids don't have the ability to have a hot meal all the time, so we do lunch, and now we're giving the opportunity to give hot dinner as well.”

White says the after-school program could expand to the middle school if it is successful at the high school.

The after-school program will run until the end of the school year and will pick up again at the beginning of the next school.
