New gym, new opportunities for young athletes in Ohio Valley

Eastern Ohio Speed and Agility Academy focuses on working with athletes who desire to take their talents to the next level, whether that be high school, college or beyond.

After years training at Steubenville Big Red, Strength and Conditioning Coach Tay Montgomery has opened his own gym to train athletes across the Ohio Valley.

"When we finally opened this gym, and we saw the turf and all the sayings on the wall and our motto, it made it so much better because it was hard work that was put into this and that is what I try to instill back to these athletes,” Montgomery said.

Eastern Ohio Speed and Agility Academy focuses on working with athletes who desire to take their talents to the next level, whether that be high school, college or beyond. Montgomery works on their speed, agility and quickness, but the biggest lesson he teaches his athletes is to have confidence to compete -- at any age

"My youngest athlete here is five years old, I like to give the young ones confidence and we train all sports,” Montgomery said. “It’s all sports academy: male, female, does not matter where you are from, as long as you want to come in and laugh and get to work, we will help you."

After seeing the success, he has had with athletes at Big Red, students like Justin Hartzel from Steubenville Central knew if he wanted to achieve his goals, Montgomery was the answer.

"These kids kept beating me in races and I just went up to them and asked him and they said he was the best coach around and I got connected with him through that."

Alec Taylor will be heading off to Ohio State this fall to play baseball, and said he knows working with Montgomery will put him ahead of the game.

"I will get there and be ready to perform at my top ability,” Taylor said. “Hopefully, I train more than other recruits and with his help, I’ll be ready to go."

Montgomery’s dream was achieved when he opened the gym. Now he can help athletes achieve theirs.

"Every time an athlete walks in this door, I want them to look at positive things,” Montgomery said. “In life, there are so many people telling you what you can't do... and we strive off of being confident and every time you find a no, we are going to try and find two yes's."

Eastern Ohio Speed and Agility Academy is always welcoming new athletes. More information can be found at their website here.
