Mountain bikers ride to raise funds for kids
HANCOCK COUNTY, W. Va. —
A group of mountain bikers held their 5th Annual New Year's Day trail ride, which raises money to purchase bikes for kids.
Team Mojo met at Tomlinson Run Park to hit the trails.
"We never know what the elements are going to be like,” said Bill Crawford, a rider in the group. “We've had some pretty good days in the past on New Year's Day, you never know what's going to happen."
What happened was an average of 7-degree temperatures, whipping wind and several inches of snow crunching under tires. A half-dozen riders showed up in the extreme conditions.
"We want to show that it doesn't matter what the situation is, we just want to support those local kids and recognize them,” Crawford said.
Crawford and Team Mojo, supporting kids happens in a multitude of ways.
"Sports, Camp Fitch, cheerleading - musical lessons is one of my favorite things," Crawford said.
The New Year's Day trail ride in Tomlinson Run Park in Hancock County is a specific fundraiser: doing what they love so kids can take part, too.
"In the last five years, everybody's pitched in a couple bikes, and we've been able to get bikes for kids who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them,” Crawford said.
All sorts of layers, and even over-sized mittens - all part of prep for cold weather riding. Team Mojo's ride is just starting. The charity will continue fundraising events throughout the year.
"A good way to jump start the new year,” Crawford said.
