McMechen church destroyed by fire will be rebuilt

On June 3, a fire in McMechen destroyed the historic First Church of God on Logan Street in McMechen.

Church leaders say they're now working to rebuild.

"We never dreamed this would be the avenue that God would choose to give us something better, something for the community,” Rev. Mitchell Johnston said.

The congregation is staying positive, still holding service every Sunday in the elementary school.

He says he's hoping to have a new church built at the current site in the next year.

Now, Altmeyer Funeral Home, with the help of community donations, are assisting with the treasured memories program.

"We have established a campaign on behalf of the First Church of God to help raise much needed funds to rebuild their church,” said Sarah Barickman, outreach director, Altmeyer Funeral Home.

"We are committed to serving our community and being good citizens to our community, and we felt this is something we could do to help the church and the people that attend that church.”

The church did have some insurance, but it won't cover everything.

Johnston says they hope to raise enough money to build the church back up.

"We are wanting people to know we are grateful and thank them for the support in this destructive tragic time for our church,” Johnston said.
