Mayor gauging interest in Trader Joe’s in downtown Steubenville

Steubenville Mayor Jerry Barilla sent a tweet asking people to fill out an online form through the Trader Joe's website if they were interested in a Steubenville location.

Steubenville Mayor Jerry Barilla is pushing to get a Trader Joe’s grocery store in downtown Steubenville.

Barilla has started what he's calls a 2-week mini campaign online to gauge interest in the idea.

He sent a tweet asking people to fill out an online form through the Trader Joe's website if they were interested in a Steubenville location.

There are no guarantees, Barilla writes, as Trader Joe's are mostly found just in big cities.

In just a few days, Barilla says that link has attracted an estimated 20,000 people.

Barilla says this mini campaign started when he realized the need for more food and grocery options in the downtown area.

“What initiated the whole idea was that downtown Steubenville, at one time, had more than 5,000 people living and working in downtown, and there isn't a grocery store downtown. You have one at the Hollywood Plaza and Wintersville, I think, has two grocery stores, but downtown is void of a grocery store.”
