Man sentenced for kidnapping after forcing woman to take him to hospital
OHIO COUNTY, W.Va. —
Michael Sherry admitted he forced a woman to give him a car ride, and now he’s asking for forgiveness.
In court Thursday where Sherry was sentenced 1-3 years in prison for the crime, he told the victim he was sorry. He said he was suffering from PTSD and alcoholism.
"I never meant any harm to you,” he said, “and if I frightened you. I am so sorry."
The incident happened on March 4, 2016 at Ohio Valley Medical Center. Sherry had refused treatment and forced the victim to take him across state lines to East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry.
Sherry wrote a letter to that woman and read it aloud.
"I am a recovering alcoholic, and had I not had a drink 14 months ago, I wouldn't be standing here today," he said.
Sherry's family spoke on his behalf, asking the judge for mercy.
They say his is now getting the help he needs.
The victim did not speak.
