Jefferson County, Ohio 4-H members helping Jefferson County, Texas 4-H members

Jefferson County, Texas is a little more than 1,000 miles from Jefferson County, Ohio, but 4-H members in the Ohio Valley are doing what they can to help their fellow 4-H members affected by Hurricane Harvey.

The Ohio State University Extension Office in Jefferson County started collecting donations 2 weeks after Harvey hit the Texas coast.

“When we saw the news about Hurricane Harvey, the one thing that caught my ear was they talked a lot about Houston, but just east of Houston was Jefferson County,” said Janine Yeske, 4H educator, Jefferson County.

And in just a few months, they've raised $3,000 worth of Walmart gift cards.

“The 4-H agent there told us that some families had lost everything; other families were untouched,” Yeske said. “With Walmart gift cards, she could make sure the families with the most need got the most gift cards.”

Organizers say they want 4-H members in Texas to know that 4-H members across the country care.

“Because it was Jefferson County, Texas, I felt like there was a connection for us, that it was personal,” Yeske said. “They're 4-H members just like our members.”

The 4-H club hopes to raise a total of $4,000, and it will continue accepting donations until Wednesday, Nov. 15, to be sure these families receive help before the holidays.

You can bring a $25 Walmart gift card or $25 check to Extension Office in Jefferson County, located on the 5th floor of the Towers Building at 500 Market Street in Steubenville, Ohio.
