Jefferson County Land Bank awarded for its efficiency

The Jefferson County Land Bank is receiving an additional $1.5 million in funding because of its efficiency.

The Jefferson County Land Bank is getting an early Christmas present.

The agency is receiving an additional $1.5 million in funding.

While it seems like a gift, the increase was earned. State authorities deemed the Jefferson Land Bank the most efficient agency of its type in Ohio.

Here’s why: They oversaw 40 demolitions of abandoned or vacant ghost houses in 2017.

Director Martin Sohovich says the agency plans to tackle more than double that in 2018. They’re anticipating 90 dilapidated structures coming down in Jefferson County next year.

They also may save a few as part of a new program they started over the summer and already have three houses they believe can be put back into shape as livable homes.
