The Jefferson County commissioners signed a proclamation recognizing February 2018 as Black History Month during their meeting on Thursday.

Commissioners also honored Dolores Wiggins, president of the Ohio Valley Black Caucus, who has been fighting endlessly for civil rights.

"It means a lot to me, being a black woman in this 21st Century, it means an awful lot to me, thank God for that,” Wiggins said. “Civil rights belong to all people, not some people, not a sect or religion, race, or creed, it belongs to all people."

"Dolores Wiggins has been a strong force here in Jefferson County over many, many years fighting for civil rights for all people and all races and that's what the civil rights is all about. People like her have made a difference in Jefferson County and in the nation," Commissioner Tom Graham said.

Harvard Scholar dr. Carter G. Woodson first established Black History Month in 1926.
