Hupp named WPD Officer of the Year

The Wheeling Police Department has announced its Officer of the Year.

Patrolman First Class Jason Hupp has been given the honor.

Hupp has been employed with the WPD since 2013 and was promoted to his current rank in 2015.

He's a Benwood native and assigned to the department's alpha shift and primarily patrols the south district, which includes downtown and East Wheeling.

“I was honored to get it,” Hupp said. “There are a lot of officers that deserve it as well.”

"Jason is a leader among police officers,” Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said. “He is very high stats to arrest, nearly 100 this year, issuing criminal and traffic citations. His work ethic is unprecedented and his attitude is paramount to our success.”

The Officer of the Year award was implemented in 2015 and is designed to properly recognize the efforts of the officers within the department.
