Four water breaks plague Wheeling on Tuesday

There were four water main breaks Tuesday in Wheeling, prompting crews to brave the cold and restore service.

"It's just been one of those mornings,” Wheeling Public Works Director Rusty Jebbia said.

"A lot of it has been the age of the pipes. We have a lot of older water lines. The cold with the extreme temperatures we've had have really been playing a lot of havoc on our system."

That same cold has made simple repairs more difficult.

“It's really slowed us down in making the repairs because it's been so cold,” Jebbia said. “I'm concerned about our employees, the workers, trying to stay warm. They've been taking turns going in and out as they're digging the holes. They'll take turns in the hole because it's actually warmer down in the hole than it is up top.”

The breaks were at Fairview Terrace and Echoe, both in Edgewood, 23rd and Eoff, and Springdale avenue.

Roughly 40 homes have been affected.

"They're doing the best they can with the weather conditions, and they always do,” Jebbia said. “Especially this time of the year. It's tough to get these jobs done."

All repairs are expecting to be complete by Tuesday evening.
