Former Orrick CEO Baxter will run for Congress in 2018

Wetzel County native, Wheeling businessman and former Orrick CEO Ralph Baxter has announced he will run for Congress in 2018.

Wetzel County native, Wheeling businessman and former Orrick CEO Ralph Baxter has announced he will run for Congress in 2018.

Baxter made the announcement at Orrick's Wheeling location on Tuesday afternoon.

So far, Baxter is the only democrat to announce his candidacy for the First District U.S. House Seat. Republican David McKinley occupies the seat and has announced he will run again.

Baxter says he wants to focus on bringing jobs to the U.S. and the Ohio Valley.

He brought a law firm's global operations center to Wheeling and is wondering whether his skills and knowledge could help to the nation.

"For the last 16 years, we have been growing jobs in wheeling from 70-to-350 and brought another business to Wheeling and 500 jobs,” Baxter said. β€œAnd my goal, if I get to represent this district, is to bring more and more high-paying jobs to West Virginia.”

Baxter says the drug problems in the Ohio Valley are a concern for him.

Prior to becoming an attorney, he was a 6th-grade teacher in Washington, D.C.

The Wetzel County Democratic party has announced Baxter will be one of two guest speakers at its next executive committee meeting.
