They're hoping to have the park completed in June, but organizers say it has a lot to do with how Mother Nature treats the area.

It’s an idea that began in 2013 when Wheeling won the PetSafe Bark for Your Park competition.

Tara Patterson with the Wheeling Dog Park Association says they're in the home stretch.

“Right now, we are waiting on the fencing to come in, and then we will start the seeding process, which will be the most time-consuming, because Mother Nature will need to take its time,” Patterson said.

The Fitzsimmons family donated another $25,000 last year for the naming rights. The 2-acre facility will be located near the Tunnel Green Athletic Complex-- in East Wheeling-- and will include two different areas: one for large dogs and one for small dogs.

Patterson says she expects it to help the growing Wheeling area.

"There are a lot of people that have dogs and dog parks are the fastest growing across the nation in general,” Patterson said.

"They're coming from areas where people have dog parks and they have dogs sometimes before kids, so it'll be great in a social aspect for the adults and the dogs.”

They would like to add some amenities to the park. The park is taking part in the Amazing Raise on May 2 and hosting a "yappy hour" at Quaker Steak on May 19.
